This weekend marks the 20th anniversary of Justice Clarence Thomas’s confirmation to the Supreme Court. The jurist has certainly proven his value on the Bench - this year, he became the 14th justice honored with a Greenbag bobblehead - but rarely has a justice who speaks so little been such a lightning rod for criticism.

This year alone, Justice Thomas has been branded “too biased” to hear an individual mandate appeal, too critical of left-leaning law schools, and too secretive about his financial disclosures.

The most famous criticism of Thomas, however, came during his 1991 confirmation hearings, when Anita Hill testified that Thomas sexually harassed her while he was her supervisor at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. (If you think that testimony is long forgotten, think again: This weekend, Hunter College is hosting a conference discussing Anita Hill’s impact on race, class and gender over the last 20 years.)

Regardless of your opinion of Justice Thomas - or any of The Nine for that matter - we think the Supreme Court is filled with interesting people. Today, in honor of Justice Thomas’s 20 years on the Court, we’re sharing three things we like about Clarence Thomas.

  • Pizza parties. Justice Thomas hosts a pizza party and screening of The Fountainhead at his home each year for his law clerks.
  • Motoring. Justice Thomas and his wife, Ginni, spend their summers on the great open road in their motor home. And if they don’t need to recharge their ride at a campground, the pair like to camp in WalMart parking lots.
  • State School Champion. While most Supreme Court Justices hand-pick their clerks from Harvard, three of Justice Thomas’s four clerks this year graduated from state law schools.
